Need to strip "events/category/" from all category pages

I need to strip ‘events/’ and ‘category/’ from the event category URL’s, but leave the actual category names in it.
For example, I have two categories: Bricklaying and Plastering. So I’d like my URL to go from http://mydomain.com/events/category/bricklaying to http://mydomain.com/bricklaying.

What is the easiest most straightforward way to do this, if at all possible?

That’s going to be quite tricky and is really beyond what we can assist you with here – I’d suggest that if there isn’t already a suitable plugin out there that can accomplish this then you’re going to need solid WP development skills to implement this.
