We are moving our website to a new layout/theme/etc. Is there a recommended way to backup and restore the events calendar or some other way we can move our current events list to the new website?
Hey lmn,
This is a great question–I’m so glad you brought it up because it’s important to be safe when moving sites!
First off, I would definitely recommend backing up all your files and your database before moving anything. This will ensure you have something to fall back on in the event anything goes south.
That said, you have a couple of options to migrate events from one site to the other:
- A straight database migration. If you plan to move your existing database to the new site, then you should be good to go, so long as everything has been converted to the new site URL.
- Exporting XML. This is likely the easiest thing to do. Head to Tools > Export from the WordPress dashboard and select your Events, Venues, Organizers and any other event-related content. This will produce an XML file that WordPress will then be able to import using Tools > Import.

One more question.
Straight db migration won’t work… totally new site
Export could work. Images in the existing website would have incorrect links once moved over to the new site. Are there any best practices that would help prevent that or any type of ‘link updater’ plugin that would allow us to quickly update the image links in the events themselves (a lot of our events are repeat event in diff locations and cities, so we might have 20 events all linking to the same image… any way to update this link once for all events???)

The only way images will migrate properly is by migrating your /uploads directly as well. That will make sure the same files are in tact and linked up.
The one thing I would be cautious with is URL for those images. If the URLs are not currently relative (e.g. /path-to-image) or make use of something like site_url() then those URLs will still point to where they did before. The plugin does make proper use of that when calling a Featured Image to a template, so you should be good there.
As far as following best practices, this WordPress Codex article does an excellent job of outlining the process. Following these tips will help a ton.
