Is this look (see below) possible with the free event calendar?

Dear readers,

Browsing through the showcase, I found https://theeventscalendar.com/showcase/medspeaks/
I like the looks and functioning very much, because
1. A user can choose a category of events,
2. A category-visual is visible at each event,
and
3. Each event is just category-visual, title, date and very short description.

My most-wanted calendar would be much like this:

My question is:
Can this be done with the free calendar, or should I move on to PRO?
If it can be done, I’d like to receive hints on ‘how’!!!

There is a fair amount of custom coding that went into the specific page that you linked to. We provide the Themer’s Guide to help developers get started making customizations.

The list view is available with the free and pro versions, and would be the view type to start with for customizations along these lines.
