ParticipantOn several places you’re incorrectly using the __() function from wordpress, and it makes it virtually impossible to correctly translate the system. The main problem is that you’re trying to build the sentences automatically.
Strings such as:
%s Website
%s Cost
%s DetailsWhere you simply put in the word Event, works fine for English – but it does not work for Norwegian and a bunch of other languages. The users will understand what is meant, but it’s not proper Norwegian.
The word Event translates to several different forms in Norwegian:
Arrangement (An event)
Arrangementet (The event)
Arrangementene (All the events)
…and so on.For you it would be like:
An Event Website
An Event Cost
etc.To make matters worse: We’re not allowed to use capital characters in the middle of a sentence, so we can’t try to rephrase the sentences like “The organizer of %s”.
The solution to the problem is of course problematic, since it destroys much of your translations – but I know that this problem is true for many of the European languages; German, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, Norwegian, probably French and Spanish as well.
You should stop using %s inside of sentences for language words. It will yield a few more sentences to translate, but that is no problem compared to me having to rewrite every single template to make it look good in Norwegian.
%s Website
%s Cost
%s Detailsfor %s = Event would translate to something like:
Arrangementsnettsted
Deltakerkostnad
Detaljer for arrangementetNovember 16, 2015 at 9:43 am #1026494Frode
ParticipantAlso, in your translation tool you give an error message when the translated string does not use %s; which is fair if you’re reusing the partial string several places.

ParticipantHey Frode,
Thanks for reaching out to us!
This is definitely an issue and something that has been brought up internally before with our team. To be fully honest, I’m not sure where we settled on the issue and I don’t see any current tickets that address this issue directly. That being said, I’ve added this as a priority topic for our discussion today and will bring your concerns up with the rest of the team and will follow up with you after that.
Thanks!

MemberHey there!
Just wanted to jump in here and let you know that we released The Events Calendar 4.0.6 last night and it included a fix for this issue. Please check your WordPress updates, or you can also grab the latest copy over at WordPress.org.
Thanks for your patience while we worked on this! Please feel free to open a new thread if you continue to experience the same issue or have any other questions that pop up during updating and we’d be happy to help. 🙂
Cheers!
