ParticipantHi!
I’m very happy customizing my calendar! 🙂 But I have noticed that if I have many events (I have all type of events in various cities), the calendar starts streching vertically and it doesn’t look like a normal calendar and I think this can confuse the users…
My question is… can I add an icon for each event category in the grid day and when I mouse-over on it, inside the tooltip that appears, display an events’ list of that category?? Just like in the calendar widget, but instead of showing the day number, showing an icon. Is that possible??
If it’s too complicated to put an icon, is it possible to put a text link?? for example: if I have music, theatre and dance events, if in that day we have 20 events, we could put a link for each event category to see the list of those events in the tooltip. Could it be??
Thanks a lot! 😉

MemberHi there Javier. Thanks for the note here, and for the words. Awesome to hear you’ve been having some success with the customization and we appreciate the feedback you’ve provided here on the forums so far.
This is a neat idea. I’m not sure how feasible it is given the current limitations of how the plugin is configured, but you could always rely on the color-coding categorization approach Jonah detailed in his walkthrough here: https://theeventscalendar.com/coloring-your-category-events/. Would that help with the problem at all?
If that doesn’t do the trick, mind posting a link or screenshot so we can see the issue in action (and try to advise the best course of action to working through it)? Thanks in advance!

ParticipantHi Rob!
This is the link to the screenshot:
http://www.refresssh.com/calendarlinks.jpgMy idea is, instead of including the event link in the gridview (because if you have 20 events on a day… the grid is going to stretch vertically… imagine 31 days!), to include a “category text” or a “category icon” with the number of events scheduled in the day. When you mouse over the “category text” or “category icon”, a tooltip appears with the events’ links inside.
The “category text” and “category icon” could be a link to the list view of that event´s category.
It´s very similar to the calendar widget… I think so…
Thanks!

MemberThis is a solid idea, Javier – I can certainly see the value in that and it looks clean on your example screenshot.
Let me see what Jonah says regarding the feasibility of this on a broader level. Personally, I’d love to see support for it added to the code eventually…but not sure what that would entail. I’ll get Jonah to chime in directly when he hits the forums today.

ParticipantHi Javier,
I agree this would be a nice feature but unfortunately it’s too complicated for me to be able to provide a solution here. Basically you’re going to want to modify /wp-content/plugins/the-events-calendar/views/table.php (make sure to override by placing a copy in an ‘events’ folder in your theme) and modify the PHP to get it to group events by category.
If you come up a solution, it’d be great if you could share with the rest of the community!
Cheers,
