In the event of someone buying multiple tickets – I can’t see how that user can separate the tickets he receives amongst attendees? Usually in ticketing systems this comes through as a PDF so can easily be sent on to the right people.
With ETP all the tickets come through embedded in a single email with no obvious or clear way to send them on to individual attendees? Or am I missing something obvious…

By default, all tickets are sent in an email to the purchaser of the tickets. However, you can try the following snippet, which may be able to help you achieve the results that you are looking for:

You can also use our Themer’s Guide to edit the ticket and email templates to help you get closer to what you are looking to achieve.

If I buy a ticket to an event for me and 3 friends, I currently receive an email with 3 tickets embedded into a single email.
How am I supposed to share the correct ticket with my friends?

I apologize if I was unclear. I believe I understood your question, however we do not have this functionality out of the box, which I why I offered that snippet to you.
Another option would be for you to add the following extension to your site, so that you can add a “view tickets” link for your tickets, and from there you can select individual tickets:
