How to Make Featured Image Show in Search Engines

I looked for this answer but couldn’t find it. For some reason, I thought but maybe I am wrong, that the Featured Image, both in a WordPress post and in a Single Event post in The Event Calendar would show up in Search engine image galleries like Google. I name my featured image files with keywords and I also often add All Text before uploading them. However, none of them seem to appear in image search results. Do the feature images have to actually be inserted into the events/posts for this to work?
