How to best display upcoming events in the next week, from one category only?

Hi,

So… I will just explain my particular use case, and then maybe extract a more general question from there:

I do a lot of Church websites, and often find I need to display the upcoming services in a box or similar on the front page (think widget rather then the full calendar. ) Since the main service is often on Sundays, it makes most sense to display the services ordered by week, one week at a time.

Selecting just the type of events I need can easily be done using categories (and then filtering in the widget. )
But since the number of services (events) will differ from week to week (Ie: some weeks may have a wednesday service that should be included on the front page, other weeks might not) simply limiting the number of events by number, doesn’t really work.

In plain english the extra filter I am looking for would be something like:
Display only events from [ this category ] that are happening [this current week]

And, this need to be on the front page, or in a widget of some kind, so that I don’t have to use the full calendar pages.

1. Does this question make sense?
2. Do you have any suggestion for how to show this?

I guess I forgot about the secret super plugin: Event Rocket.

Using that and this short code I think I got what I am looking for:
[event_embed from="today" to="next monday" category="services" template="embedded-events"]

Unless there is a (better?) way to solve this without using the slightly experimental Rockets plugin, I think I am good.

Hey Anders!

I’m glad you found out about Event Rocket! It’s indeed a little bit of a “secret weapon” of sorts 🙂

To be honest, Event Rocket works very well and should provide the user-friendly, easy-to-change features you’re looking for here. It’s what I would’ve recommended as the first option, and is a much-beloved little plugin for exactly the sorts of reasons you describe here.

How’s it working for you? Are you able to have it on the front page how you like, and have the sort of control over events display that you’re looking for here?

The next-best options I can think of would be writing custom code, either somewhere in your theme or literally hand-crafting a widget that you can drag and drop into your sidebar. But that would basically be imitating Events Rocket in some ways anyway, so if you find that Events Rocket works fine for your needs my recommendation is to keep using it! You can always come back and open another ticket for some extra help with things if you find that your needs are growing a bit beyond Event Rocket’s feature-set.

“Unofficially recommended” is the perfect way to describe this – we do not sell this plugin, for example, and it’s not an “official” product, but it’s very stable and made by one of the Core devs here. Many, many people use it and love it!
