ParticipantHello,
I am just wanting some advice on how far in the future to set my event series for.
I understand that the event posts are generated into the future up until the length of time ahead that you add in Events > Settings > Create recurring events in advance for
– so if i set my event series to end in say 1 year’s time, I will only ever have events created in Events > Events for the next 3 month’s time if i have set Create recurring events in advance for to 3 months?
My website admin area – when editing event posts can be really slow – and I don’t want to slow it down by having my event series end date eg a year away and cause it to slow any more..?
Thanks very much,

ParticipantAddition: I sometimes get the ‘The webpage has become responsive’ (attached screenshot) message in Chrome (slightly different message in Firefox) – and don’t want to make this worse by having too many event posts in the admin area which i presume will slow it down…?

ParticipantHi Lucy,
Thanks for reaching out, I’m happy to help out here!
If you’re having performance issues, I’d definitely stick to the settings you have (events for one year, but created 3 months out). I’d also suggest looking into your hosting server to make sure that you have enough resources to handle your traffic. 🙂
Best,
Shelby 🙂

ParticipantHi Shelby, thanks for your reply.
So am I right that it doesn’t matter how far ahead my event series / recurring event end date is, it is what I have set in
Events > Settings > create recurring events in advance for: , that could have an impact on admin area performance, say if it was higher, like 6 months instead of 3?And are you saying that the ‘website unresponsive’ message is more to do with the quality of hosting package I am on?
Thanks again,

ParticipantHey Lucy,
Thanks for clarifying your questions. If you extended the length of time to make it longer, it would definitely would have a negative impact on performance on the back end.
Also yes, the “website unresponsive” message is definitely a hosting-related issue, not something our plugin could cause.
Let me know if I can help answer any further questions!
Best,
Shelby 🙂

ParticipantHi Shelby,
Thanks for your replies so far.
Ok so am I right in understanding that event posts are only created in the back end as far as you set the end date of the event series, but then as far as what is set in Events > Settings > Create recurring events in advance for:
?Eg. if i set my event series to end in 6 month’s time, but set Create recurring events in advance for: to 3 months in advance, will 3 month’s or 6 month’s worth of posts be created in the back end?
I recently did just that (Event series end in 6 months, create recurring events in advance for 3 months) – and am having problem with very slow performance in the back end. A particular event post will also not open at all – it gets stuck and i get a ‘wait’ or ‘kill’ message – see attached.
Could this be because my event series is set to end in 6 month’s time? – will ending this sooner – and keeping extending it – solve the issue?
Or what other things can affect the event posts opening in the back end – internet connection? – and you said before the hosting package may not be very good….
Thanks very much, i look forward to your reply 🙂

MemberHi Lucy!
Let me help you with that while Shelby’s out for a few days.
You are correct with what you state. If you have set 3 months for “create recurring events in advanced for”, it will create instances for your recurring events up to 3 months in advanced, regardless of your 6 month long recurring event settings. You can learn more about this here >Â https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/pro-recurring-events/#longterm
The slow down in performance you are having could be related to the number of events/instances you currently have. But there are also several things you should take into account if you are having performance issues.
Let me point you to a great article that will get you started on Performance Considerations you should know about. After that, if you decide to implement a caching system then you can move to these articles: Caching: What, when and how and Caching month view HTML in transients
Finally, there is a good article George put up here that groups a set of developer plugins. It’s a bit more technical than the others but will definitely be of help if you are into development.
Just in case, could you please enable WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG ? This will create a debug.log file inside the /wp-content directory.
After that, try reproducing the page unresponsive message a few times, so that in case there is an error, it will be saved into the debug.log file. Please share that log file with us so we can see if any problem from there.
Let me know how that goes.
