If you have something that can’t be found on a map, like say an address on a military base, since one, they are usually weird, and two, the Google Car didn’t drive past it, so the area isn’t really “finished”, so all I can do is use a map that I create by placing a marker. Interestingly, if I pick “What’s Here?” I’ll get a Google created marker pretty close to my particular target.. I get a street name, and city/zip code, but when I use that in the venue, I get someplace else. Part of the problem is while there are several streets named the same thing, they’re no where near each other, and bases are done by building numbers that are not always in order, as they’re not all renumbered when things are added/replaced. Unlike the non-government land, there is no navtech/map data for these areas to search on.

If I could plug in http://goo.gl/maps/cMGP6 for the venue, as I can still do “Get Directions to Here”, and I have many of my venues setup with custom maps that have notes on them about the location/activity and where to go, how to get into the building, what entrance, etc. Stuff that isn’t on a typical map anyway.

Hi Tony – thanks for contacting us and sorry it took so long to get back to you.

There is no baked in method of doing this, at least not via the admin interface, however one possible workaround would be to use a custom field. Let’s call it “custom_map_link” (though you could name it whatever you think appropriate).

You could then modify the events/single.php template such that if that “custom_map_link” field exists and contains a URL then that is the link that should be used.

I’m afraid it’s beyond the scope of support to guide you through this in detail but if nothing else it should give you an idea of how you might approach this problem (I wouldn’t expect it to take an experienced dev too long to implement if you needed help).

Hope that gets you on track 🙂
