ParticipantSee http://events.stcwdc.org/event/stc-wdcb-summer-vision-day-meeting/
I clicked on the Google button by accident on the event description page and got (I’m in the Firefox browser):Google
414. That’s an error.
The requested URL /… is too large to process. That’s all we know.July 30, 2013 at 5:06 pm #57886Barry
MemberSo there is a practical limit in many cases as to how long URLs can be and in this case the generated Google Calendar URL is exceeding that – primarily because the description, which is encoded into the URL, is not being shortened.
However, I can’t replicate the same thing even if I use a very long description. What I’m wondering then is if this could be a conflict with some other plugin, your theme or even a piece of custom code that’s been added to your theme functions.php file.
Are you able to run through our regular troubleshooting steps of deactivating all non-Modern Tribe plugins and switching to a default, unmodified theme to see if that helps?
If it does resolve this, are you able to identify which component (either your theme or a plugin) is causing this?

ParticipantI turned off the non-Modern Tribe plugins and switched to the basic Twenty Eleven theme and I still have the problem. I removed most of the new functions and it works so I am now putting them back one at a time to see which one breaks it.

ParticipantWell, I added functions back one by one and after putting all of them back, it still works OK. Perhaps it was a one-time anomaly?
I guess you can close this now.July 30, 2013 at 8:55 pm #57908Andy Fragen

MemberHmm, well that is strange.
I actually don’t recall that issue from 2.0.x (Andy) but you may be right. In this specific case my bat sense is suggesting this may have resulted from a customization in functions.php even though your final steps (Cynthia) would seem to suggest all of the custom code in there is good.
Let’s leave this for the time being, unless either of you object, and if it does return we can definitely revisit it.

ParticipantThe 414 error returned today. It is a long URL but that may or may not be the cause since Barry said above that he couldn’t duplicate it with a long URL. Is there a way to pull in the WordPress URL shortener when posting an event to the calendar? http://events.stcwdc.org/event/gamification-and-the-new-rules-for-user-assistance-recorded-webinar/
The iCal Import button doesn’t work. I’ll open a separate thread for that one.

ParticipantAn update–I posted a new event with a shorter title and tried to add it to Google Calendar. This time, I got a login for Google, then it took me to the 414 Error page. When I clicked the Back button, I got the calendar entry to save in Google Calendar. Odd series of events. http://events.stcwdc.org/event/section-508-2-day-core-workshop-august-12-13/

MemberHi Cynthia – I visited http://events.stcwdc.org/event/gamification-and-the-new-rules-for-user-assistance-recorded-webinar/ and was able to progress to Google Calendar without any problems.
I’m not sure why this is sporadic in nature – but I can’t find a way to replicate this at all using a stock installation of WordPress/our plugins even with very long titles and descriptions. Did you find a solution in the interim/have you been able to isolate anything behind this?
Definitely a strange problem (and not in any way to diminish this, but not one we’ve seen widely reported with the current release).

ParticipantNo, I am not able to isolate it to anything. It is just sporadic.
August 7, 2013 at 7:37 pm #59438Barry
MemberJust to be clear – sporadic even in relation to the same event?

MemberHey, just wanted to follow-up here Cynthia. Any thoughts on Barry’s last note that might be able to help us out here?

MemberI’m going to close this one since it’s been a while. Cynthia, if I’ve done so in error, please create a new thread and we’ll do what we can to help.

MemberHi there,
I just wanted to drop in and update you on the status of this issue. We are working on a fix, but we were not able to include it in our upcoming release (3.7). Correcting this problem is still important to us and we hope to have a fix done for a future maintenance release. We will do our best to keep you updated here on our progress. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work on this.
Best,
