ParticipantSometimes we list events, or people list events (through community tickets – we use both) and our system isn’t selling the tickets, perhaps eventrbite or digitaltickets or trybooking is. We run a community events listing and list events that we don’t ticket to draw interest to our service as the primary vertical events listing site.
It would be great to be able to select a ticket type of ‘External’ and be able to put a ticket url… that by default could put a ‘Buy Tickets’ (customisable text) link on the event so people could click the link and then go to the ticket site. (different from event website)
It would also be great if that part of the code was less complex. You need a PHD to understand how to create a custom ticket type.
We’d also love a ‘Donation’ type ticket where people can specify the value through a text field before submitting the form to the cart.

MemberHi Chris,
Thanks for following up with the individual threads! I was stoked to see these come in and I have notified the team so we can start chipping away.
This is a great feature request. In fact, I think I read two different features:
- The ability to link to an external ticketing system
- A new ticket type that includes a flexible pricing option for donation-based purchases
The ability to link to an external ticketing system
The first one is something you could theoretically do today with the Website URL field when creating an event. That can be used to enter the link where tickets can be purchased and it will be displayed in the Details section of the event (screenshot). From there, you could change the word “Website” to something like “Tickets” with a template override of the modules/meta/details.php template file. Similarly, you could change the URL to be displayed as a button with custom text using the steps outlined in this guide.
That would allow both you and your Community Events submitters to specify an external ticket source for events — is that sort of what you were looking for?
A new ticket type that includes a flexible pricing option for donation-based purchases
This is definitely an interesting idea. Just to make sure I’m understanding it, do you see this being the same thing as a normal ticket type, but with an open-ended price price that:
- allows you to specify a base price for the ticket that buyers can add to with a voluntary donation amount
- allows you to specify a base price for the ticket that buyers can add to with a mandatory donation amount
- allows you to specify no base price for the ticket and leave the total purchase price up to the buyer
- allows you to specify both specific and open-ended donation amounts
Also, do you imagine this being a feature that Event Tickets handles entirely on its own? The reason I ask is because WooCommerce already has the Name Your Price extension and my guess is that this feature would either require us to leverage that tool or override it completely if it is already installed on a site. In fact, have you tried using that extension with Event Tickets Plus? I wonder if it would address what you’re looking for without new development.
Cheers!

ParticipantExternal Ticket Source:
Yes I do this with custom fields at the moment, but it’s clunky and you can’t import ticket links from facebook that way also. (would love custom field support for imports – another request for another day)
1) would love to be able to specify the external ticket link that produces a button to click ‘Buy Tickets’, aka a link with a nice button.
2) would love to create a ticket with a price, pointing to ticket link (which allows you to display pricing of the event)The reason for the button, is the same as my issue with current ‘website’ if the url is long, then it wraps or overlaps other text in the box, so a button makes it neat, and you can have a tooltip come up with the link if you want UX.

Donation:
I think it would be good to offer both options:
1) the ability to enter the amount
2) the ability to default that amountWe have had requests for this at the ticket level. So you select 2 adult, 1 child and enter a donation amount, then go to the cart.
Now you are right you put put the ‘upsell’ there, but that Is also the issue in some cases where people see it as an after the fact upsell, rather than a conscious choice… people will side either way on that one.

MemberHi Chris,
Thanks for following up!
Regarding linking to an external ticketing system, I want to be clear that I was suggesting something different than custom fields, which I agree would be a clunky way to accomplish the goal. Instead, I was suggesting small tweaks using the plugin’s existing template override system that would allow you to repurpose an existing field for the field you need. You could also use the template override to make the URL a button instead of a text link and display the price of the ticket in the text of the button using the tribe_get_formatted_cost function in the template.
This would accomplish:
- The ability to specify the external ticket link that produces a button to click ‘Buy Tickets’, aka a link with a nice button.
- The ability to create a ticket with a price, pointing to ticket link (which allows you to display pricing of the event)
To me, the suggestions sound like they would accomplish what you’re looking for using what the plugin offers today. Do you agree? If not, what do you see as preventing that from working?
And, just to confirm: I had a question in my last reply that I am note sure were covered in your reply, but are key for getting more clarity. It was regarding the ability to take donations for tickets rather than naming a firm price:
Also, do you imagine this being a feature that Event Tickets handles entirely on its own? The reason I ask is because WooCommerce already has the Name Your Price extension and my guess is that this feature would either require us to leverage that tool or override it completely if it is already installed on a site. Would you be willing to comment on that for me?
Thanks a lot!
