My site isn’t working when the PRO plugin is activated

I reactivated each of my plugins one-by-one and if I remember correctly, I was able to reactivate the Events Calendar Plugin and the Community Events, and Facebook plugins with no issues.. When I tried to activate the “Events Calendar Pro” plugin, the site reverted back to a white screen.

I spoke to bluehost and got this answer back from them:
There was some server issues yesterday that caused database corruption, repairs where ran, but it did not appear to help in your accounts case. I was able to find a good restore point from our August 15th backup, our more recent backups did not appear to have everything. After the restore the http://urbnfresh.com/ was will having issues loading, the error was reporting a problem with the events calendar plugin. I was able to deactivate that plugin and the site is loading now.

I can tell you that it IS (Events Calendar Pro )causing the problem, but not really why, other than this line of code being broken: /events-calendar-pro/lib/apm_filters.php on line 39

Right now, I’m back at a white screen when I install the pro version:
Activated Community Events and Facebook plugins
Removed the PRO pulgin via FTP
    Downloaded PRO from my account
    Re-installed the plugin via wordpress
    Clicked activate
    Back to white screen
I have all of the plugins activated except for the pro version, also the facebook events plugin cannot pull any images on import, is this somehow related?

    Hello thisismarkc,

Thanks for reaching out to us!

This is definitely a strange issue to be having and I apologize for the inconvenience. Hopefully we can get this sorted out for you.

As an initial step, since your site was restored to an older date, can you verify that the core (free) Events Calendar from the repository is the latest version (3.7) as well as all of the add-ons?

    Thanks!

Josh and Mark: I’m passing this over to Barry for driving forward, since he’s got the context and experience troubleshooting these hosting-specific issues.

    Hi Mark,

I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing these issues. I’m admittedly a bit puzzled by the cited error:

I can tell you that it IS (Events Calendar Pro )causing the problem, but not really why, other than this line of code being broken: /events-calendar-pro/lib/apm_filters.php on line 39

This is actually a pretty innocuous bit of code and so I can’t help but wonder if it is something of a “red herring” … and if the true problem lies elsewhere.

The last thing I want to do though is cause further disruption to your existing site while we investigate this. I’m wondering, do you feel comfortable setting up a fresh WordPress installation in a subdirectory? It should be fairly straightforward with a CPanel-based hosting account (which I understand BlueHost provides) – and that will give us a nice clean site in which to test.

If you’re able to set that up, can I ask you initially to add nothing except The Events Calendar and Events Calendar PRO (our latest versions of each) and see if you are able to get them both activated?

If as soon as you try to activate PRO you hit similar problems/a “white screen of death” then we’ll know that there is a problem with that plugin within your hosting environment and I’d ask that you stop and let us know – and, ideally, provide a login (to the test site only) and if at all possible FTP access (which you can share via a private reply, if of course you feel comfortable doing so).

On the other hand, if it activates without a hitch that tells us that there isn’t an intrinsic problem with Events Calendar PRO and that perhaps a conflict of some kind, or perhaps an environmental issue, is at work.

Would it be possible to give this a shot? Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions 🙂

    Hi Mark,

So the ideal way forward would be if you create the test site and set it up as described in my last reply, then share the credentials for that test site only – that way my access is appropriately limited.

If you can’t do that and prefer that I set it up that’s absolutely fine – but because the credentials you have provided give me access to far more than just a test site alone I have to ask you to give your explicit consent for us to login and do this work on your behalf before I can proceed: I also need to make it clear that we can accept no responsibility for any issues that may arise from this.

Can you confirm that’s all in order?

    You have my explicit consent.
Please do your best to operate only within the urbnfresh folders

    Hi again Mark,

Thanks for your patience so far – much appreciated 🙂

Hopefully you can see my private reply (above) which will give you access to the test site: this is a fresh WordPress installation with the latest versions of The Events Calendar and Events Calendar PRO running – I also imported some test data as you can see if you view the list of events.

As it stands there doesn’t seem to be any problem – you can login, view the frontend, edit events etc all without hitting a white screen. Given that, I’m inclined to challenge your hosting company’s assertion:

I can tell you that it IS (Events Calendar Pro )causing the problem, but not really why, other than this line of code being broken: /events-calendar-pro/lib/apm_filters.php on line 39

If there was a problem with that line of code (and, as we noted before, it’s not a line of code that really does anything complex – it simply sets a piece of text) I’d really expect it to also be a problem here on the test site.

All in all this suggests that the problem is either a conflict with one or more of the plugins (or indeed the theme) on your live site – or else it could be environmental in nature. Sometimes, when available memory is tight or other constraints are hit up against, misleading errors can crop up in unexpected places and disguise the true problem.

    Here’s what I propose:

    • Though I do realize you indicated having already run through our standard troubleshooting steps it could be worth reviewing these a second time in case something was missed
    • Alternatively, why not try adding all of the same plugins that you have on your live site to the new test site (and also add your theme) – see if you can replicate the problem there
    • It could also be worth going back to BlueHost support: though they said they can’t really tell us why the line of code they cited is causing a problem if it’s a straight-up PHP error they should be able to tell you the actual error being logged

Can you give that a go?

Hi Mark – how are we getting on here? Did you have a moment to do any further testing (or to connect with your hosting provider)?

I deleted a few reoccurring events and changed settings and it started running. It was a shot in the dark, so I’m not sure exactly which settings I changed (as close to default as I could remember) but I was able to have the PRO plugin activated and running. Thanks everyone for their help with this

    OK, glad it’s resolved 🙂

I’ll close this thread but if we can assist with anything else definitely open as many new threads as you need and the team will be happy to help.

Last but not least, if you have a few moments to spare we’d love to hear your thoughts on The Events Calendar in general across on our plugin review page. Thanks again!
