This is not a huge issue, as it does not effect the site’s usability, but it’s still something I’d like to resolve.

I work at a school and maintain their site. We use a custom child theme based on TwentyTen. In the custom menu, I have a top-level menu item for “Calendar” and recently added a secondary menu item for “Testing Dates” to help parents easily locate those dates.

It works great! The only problem is that when you select “Testing Dates” in the menu, it shows two menu items as active. (Calendar and Resouces – a menu item for standard posts and pages)

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to start trouble shooting this? Thanks for any help!

Interesting. Out of curiosity, if you add an additional submenu item below Testing Dates – but make it a link to a regular page or post, then select that item, does the same problem occur? Or is it unique to event categories?

We use a custom child theme based on TwentyTen.

So far as you are aware, does the child implement its own menu walker – or do you have any plugins that work magic on your menus?

Our standard troubleshooting steps – ensuring your Modern Tribe plugins are up-to-date, deactivating all others and reverting to a default, unmodified theme (Twenty Ten itself or Twenty Eleven perhaps) could also be a good test to run here.

Be interesting to hear how you get on here – hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.

Ok, this is going to sound like a weird solution, but it’s fixed and this is what I did…

I tested my other two event categories in the menu. Neither of the others caused a problem. After narrowing the problem down to the specific category, I deleted it and recreated it. Surprisingly, that did not solve the problem.

My next thought was that maybe one of the events was causing the problem for the entire category. I disassociated all the events from the category. The problem persisted.

Just for the heck of it I tried adding a second “Testing” category. Everything worked fine.

My only guess is that the category ID in the database was somehow causing the problem and that when I deleted the original category and added the new one, it reused the same ID. Only when adding an additional category on top of that did it work. Who knows? Regardless, it’s fixed. Thanks for getting me thinking in the right direction. Linking to a regular post/page got my train of thought started.

Well, that’s the main thing. Bit puzzling though. Glad you’re all sorted here in any event 🙂
