Steve
ParticipantI asked this question a while back, and wasn’t in a place where I could deactivate everything to check if that was the problem. I now have a site I can do that on, and have used twenty-eleven theme with no other other plugins active, an it still happens, so I am re-asking the question. Here it is:
I have The Events Calendar 2.09, and TEC Pro 2.09 installed on my site running WordPress 3.4.2. The calendar shows on my site (http://www.exploringbangor.com/events), and I can work with Events from the menu in the control panel. However, if I bring up the Settings page I can only see the items on the General tab. If I click on any of the other ones everything disappears and I get a box saying “Cannot load tribe-events-calendar.” Any suggestions?

MemberHi Steve – that’s unfortunate.
I wonder if this might be a file permissions issue … in any event, as we are now at version 2.0.10 can you update to those new releases and check if this persists?

Participant2.0.10 does not make a difference. This has been happening for several versions. Any suggestions on which file permissions to change?

MemberHey Steve: how are you installing/updating – by FTP or some other means? It would be interesting to know for future reference.
Any suggestions on which file permissions to change?
So try changing the permissions on the plugin directory itself (wp-content/plugins/the-events-calendar and any other Modern Tribe plugin directories, such as for Events Calendar PRO) and initially make them:
- As permissive as possible (777)
- Apply the change recursively, in other words we want all files and folders within the directory to inherit those permissions
How you go about this varies according to your host and what level of access you have, so seek their advice if you are unsure. If that does solve the problem then remember to clamp the file permissions down again as leaving them at 777 is not the best idea.
You could for instance reduce the permissions iteratively until you find the lowest possible value where everything still works within your hosting environment.
And, naturally, if that doesn’t solve anything just let me know and we’ll go from there.
Thanks!

ParticipantRight now, every directory in the tree for all three (TEC, TEC-Pro, and Community Events) is 750, and every file within those directories is 644. That is the same thing all my other plugins have as well. I can change them all if you think that is necessary, but it seems like an unlikely solution, especially since the calendar is functioning on my site.

ParticipantWell, I changed the permissions as you suggested, and that didn’t fix it. Then I noticed the box at the bottom of the settings page General tab for Debug Mode. I installed the debug bar plugin and checked the box and voila – I can access the other tabs. Uncheck the box and deactivate the plugin and I get the error again. Without knowing for sure, I would bet there is some piece of code in the plugin trying to write debug info and can’t without the debug bar installed. Just a guess, though. Thanks for the help. Let me know if you need me to test anything for you.
And as for your other question – I updated via the plugin page, not via ftp.

MemberIt’s a fairly easy troubleshooting step so I’d suggest going ahead and giving it a try.
I could be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure WordPress only displays that message if the (admin related) file it is looking for doesn’t exist, or it seems that it doesn’t exist – which could result from file permission issues or PHP basedir restrictions.

MemberOK, think we posted at almost the same time there. Let me check in with some other team members and see if they have any ideas based on what you just told me.

MemberJust double-checking this – but you did update both the free, core plugin and Events Calendar PRO (so they are both at v2.0.10)?

ParticipantYes – 2.0.10. Here is a screen shot: http://www.exploringlincoln.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/EventsCalendar.JPG

MemberAll very curious. I’m afraid since the only way I can replicate this locally involves manipulation of file permissions/ownership and since you already seem to have tested out a few things there I will have to refer this up to the chain to one of the developers.

MemberSteve: we can’t replicate this. If for some reason (we have no idea why this even happens) using the debug bar solves this would it work for you to leave that activated?

MemberIt’s been a while since we last heard from you so I will now close this thread. If you need further help please don’t hesitate to create a new one.
