    Hello there,

We are currently using The Events Calendar 3.5.1 and The Events Calendar Pro 3.5.1. After updating the Plugin, events on our calendars have been duplicated numerous times.

    See here for example: http://commongood.org.za/EN/events/category/constantiaberg-am-pm/month/

This appears to be a problem other users are also struggling with but I wasn’t able to find a viable solution in any of the other forum postings.

We currently have 6 783 events listed and we did not do a backup before upgrading to the latest form of the plugin.

    Please help.

    Samantha

    Hi Samantha,

I’m sorry for the inconvenience first of all – we did just identify this bug and it’s affected a number of our users. We do have a fix, though:

    • Please create a new file called “tribe-cleanup.php” in your wp-content/plugins directory
    • Within that file, post the code you see here
    • You can then activate it from the list of plugins
    • From there you should see this new button in the event settings
    • Clicking this ought to resolve things

Even though things aren’t currently at an ideal point, I would still recommend making a backup before running through those steps.

    I hope that helps 🙂

I implemented this fix and it possible contributed to a small disaster, I think it might have deleted many of my pages and much of my uploads folder contents. Use this ‘solution’ at your own risk!

    Hi Sean,

If true that would certainly be worrying.

While it goes without saying we don’t want to leave a solution in the public domain that causes harm, I would also hate for people to be stuck in limbo from fear that it may cause a “small disaster” unless we can substantiate that there’s a general problem here. I would also highlight the recommendation that people backup before using this.

I think it might have deleted many of my pages and much of my uploads folder contents.

Can you provide any more detail? It sounds like there’s a note of hesitation there – were you performing other cleanup tasks? Do you mean to say it removed regular pages – quite unrelated to events – and even media content that is unrelated to events?

That would be pretty perplexing if so but not impossible, so if you can furnish any additional details that would be much appreciated.

I cannot be sure that the plugin fix that was posted caused the deletions as I was out of town in the days leading up to the plugin install. What I can tell you is that the deletions seemed to have occurred after I installed the fix. As for what was deleted, I noticed both regular pages, documents, and photos as missing. The pages deleted appeared to be three levels down the food chain and the images appeared to be duplicates, i.e. http://sfrecpark.org/wp-content/uploads/glyphicons_317_tree_deciduous1.png versus http://sfrecpark.org/wp-content/uploads/glyphicons_317_tree_deciduous.png

Notice the one before the png. I’m sorry that I cannot give you more details as my main task is to ensure that all of our posted documents still exist.

I will continue to monitor the site for accidental deletions and if I notice anymore troubles I will keep you informed.

I think you’re right – and thanks for bringing it to our attention. Our own testing wasn’t done with deeply nested pages and unfortunately this was missed. We’ll certainly get this reviewed and updated.

Hi Samantha: I’m really sorry for the inconvenience.

Just to make sure we’re at the same point in the process can I ask you to review this blog post (about our 3.5.2 release) and ensure you’re using the version of the cleanup plugin linked to from there?

Do you still hit 500 Internal Server Errors when you try to run it (the very latest version)?

Thank you Barry. I noticed that even though I was receiving a Server Error message that the number of duplicated events were decreasing. So I just continued hitting the merge duplicate events button until they were all gone. Problem solved!

    Excellent!

I’m sorry it was such a long and frustrating experience – but glad we got there in the end.

Hopefully it’s plain sailing from here on 🙂
