if you look at our development calendar, you’ll see that we have functional next month navigation (but no previous month navigation) up through September, then the next month navigation also disappears. Can you help?

It sounds like this tutorial is exactly what you’re looking for: Add Next/Previous links to empty months
As it notes:
By default, the month to month navigation links on your calendar will not be shown if there are no additional events to display. This means the next and previous month links on the calendar will only display if there are events in the future or in the past to be displayed.
But it provides a workaround if you wish to always displays those links, even when they are useless and can cause search engines to crawl huge chunks of your site that contain no content.

Well, no, it doesn’t make sense because all of my months have events, but adding the snippet to functions.php corrected the display of the next/prev month links.

Hmm, weird. So you have events in October of this year already? Did you manually insert all of those events, or import them somehow like via CSV?
We have seen a few users here and there reporting that the paging links are not showing even when there are events in a future month. I have been trying to isolate the cause of that. So far it’s a problem we have not been able to reproduce/find a fix for.
