There seem to be two consistent glitches I have with editing events that repeat.

The first problem I have is when I try to edit one instance of an event in the future. For example, a weekly event that happens on Tuesday, I decide I would like one Tuesday’s description to change.

I go to the calendar on the front end, find the Tuesday in question, click on the event, click “Edit” and I am taken to the backend editing page. However when I look at the dates, they are for the wrong Tuesday. It seems to revert to the current Tuesday or maybe just the first event in the series, not sure (I haven’t been using the software that long).

The best way to avoid this seems to be to use the backend event list and find the specific event there and click on it. I have to go through the list manually though because trying to use a filter only ever brings back 1 occurrence of a recurring event and that may not be the one I’m looking for. The best way is to sort the list chronologically and find which one I’m looking for and then edit from there. That will allow me to edit the right event.

The second consistent glitch is that when I am editing an event that starts on one day and goes to the next day. Once again this seems to only be an issue when editing repeating events.

What happens is if the event starts on one Friday and say goes to 1:30 AM Saturday morning (as my events often do) what I see when I open up the edit page is that the event starts and ends on Saturday (the times no longer make sense because of this). If I don’t remember to catch and fix this before saving changes, it messes up the event because the date/times are not correct.

This doesn’t seem to happen with single events.

On the whole, these glitches are at best, minor nuisances to me. I figured them out quickly and I can work around them, however it does present a problem for my editing staff, who aren’t as careful as I am (fortunately they don’t have that many events to add).

I’m hoping these issues can be fixed quickly but also I was hoping for some thought on perhaps a new approach to recurring events that might make them easier to manage on the whole.

One approach utilized by an event calendar that I almost went with had an approach to recurring events that was completely different and that I actually liked on the whole. Repeating events had their own separate custom post, they were listed separately from regular events and you added them using a different screen which was the same as your regular event screen but with the recurring options.

Once you created your recurring event, the resultant events appeared in your regular event list, while the master “Recurring event” was listed in the recurring event list.

This allowed you to easily go into the event list and find and edit an event if you wanted to make one different (or needed to delete one because it was canceled) but then also go to the recurring list, edit the template, which would immediately delete all of its “children” in the event list (including any custom changes) and recreate all of the events based on the new template.

Something similar in this software may be advantageous… or not, just offering a new approach. That process definitely had room for improvement as well.

Hi there Alan. Thanks for reaching out, and for bringing up these points. The first one is indeed a known issue in the current code that we’ve got logged in the system. While the fix won’t be included in the 2.0.5 code base (since it’s almost ready to ship and that code hasn’t yet been worked out), it will be in 2.1. The editing issue should only occur if you attempt to change from the frontend – if you do on the backend it should behave as normal, as you’ve noted.

The second bug you’ve noted here is a great one, and we hadn’t caught it yet…I’ve logged it with the team, and thanks to you we’ll be able to get it fixed for the 2.1 release as well. As with the other, apologies for the inconvenience you’re faced with in the interim.

As for the other calendar solution you noted…that’s an interesting approach, and it sounds definitely to be robust. What was it called? I suspect that’s outside the realm of what we could integrate anytime soon, but I do know that we have in the roadmap plans to change the recurrence functional to allow for more custom/random recurrence patterns. And there may be a widget or two to accompany that eventually as well.

Definitely appreciate your ideas and report here, though. Sorry I didn’t have more to offer up…and if you have any other questions let me know. Happy to help where I can.
