Calling a list of Events outside of WordPress directory

Hi, I have WordPress installed in a directory outside of the root. I am looking to embed some event information onto one of the root pages, like the homepage for example. I am not so good at php and would love it if you can send me off the right snippet needed to show that information. Here is what I am looking for:

Display the latest 3 to 5 (not sure what # yet) events (could be past or upcoming.. just the last 3-5 entered), display only the event titles as links to their respective URLs.

With standard WordPress posts, I was using something like this:
