ParticipantI love the calendar and use it on many websites. I have one client who has many events and show all of them. Their calendar takes at least 5 seconds to load http://artspartners.net/events/ We have done a few modifications to the calendar for their reoccurring events so that’s why we haven’t updated it yet. Would showing all events slow the calendar down that much? Thank you for any assistance

MemberHi – glad you love the calendar!
That certainly is a lot of events and a very high ratio of recurring events in particular … though we’re working hard to improve performance in situations like these it is nonetheless a situation where you’re ultimately likely to need a hosting environment with perhaps a little more “grunt” to speed things up … and of course you could investigate caching (at various different levels) to reduce the amount of work required to produce the month view each time it is requested.
Can you share any details about the sort of hosting arrangements you are using for that site?

ParticipantHi Barry, thank you for the quick response. I use Wiretree VPS for this site. We are only using 15% of the space and the RAM supposedly is pretty strong. I did request them to use the option to show just a few events but they say “it’s only text in a table”. I use event calendar pro and the free on many other sites but they do not have the events that this company does. Do you think it’s a hosting issue? Here is what I have.
5120MB Guaranteed RAM
80GB Pure SSD Space
1 AMD Opteron CPU Core

The end result certainly is just text in a table, but the performance hit comes when the database queries run to assemble the data that leads to that being generated.

Yes and no.
More power probably would speed things up – but at the same time there are many other things you can try first (unless you have already done so) that will probably yield greater improvements at a fraction of the cost, including caching of the generated HTML, object caching and query caching (cache everything that you can, in other words!) – the ultimate goal being to actually perform fresh database queries only if absolutely necessary – such as if events have been added or removed.
There are a number of popular plugins that can handle some of this that might be worth looking into (W3 Total Cache, to name one, though we don’t have any we’d particularly recommend over others) but depending on how in-depth you go you may find hands on access to configure MySQL etc is needed – and it sounds like you have an environment where that is indeed possible.
In summary then I would encourage you to look at caching options in the first instance and then go on to investigate increasing server resources/changing how it’s configured from there, if necessary.
Does that help?
