    Hi samarainfocenter,

It seems as if the web server is timing out after only managing to render part of the page. There are a number of possibilities here – so what I would recommend in the first instance are following our basic troubleshooting steps:

    • Please ensure that your Modern Tribe plugins are up-to-date and in-synch … for instance if you are using The Events Calendar 2.0.11 you must also use Events Calendar PRO 2.0.11
    • Deactivate all other plugins and change your theme to a default, unmodified one such as Twenty Eleven or Twenty Twelve
    • Now test to see if the problem still exists
    • If the problem has been solved by these steps, start reactivating everything one-at-a-time, testing at each point to see if the issue has returned
    • If the issue does return, take note of whichever plugin (or theme) you reactivated immediately before it started again – it’s likely there is a conflict with this item

I note also that you recently updated … what was the version you updated from – and is it possible you had custom templates relating to that previous version that may now be causing issues?

    Thanks for your reply
I disabled all of the plugins and changed the theme to twenty ten and still had the same problem. I agree it is as if the server is timing out. We do have a huge volume of events (12,000 events are loaded) as it is a calendar for the whole town and surrounding area. Would it make a difference if the sizes of images associated with events were smaller, or do you have any other suggestions to avoid the timing out and speed up loading? I may also try changing hosting. What is your advice?

My own impression was that the site as a whole was fairly slow – but various factors could be at work there and it might not be something all your visitors are experiencing or would agree with.

How well your site will cope with 12,000 events is dependant on a large number of factors – the type of hosting and server resources that are available, the amount and frequency of site traffic, if caching is in place (and what type of caching), etc.

If you are using a low end shared hosting package for instance and are getting decent levels of traffic (in addition to having all those events etc) it might be worth investigating other hosting solutions.

    Thanks
I am using a shared hosting and am considering upgrading. Still are there any options that would make this lighter? For example could we request a modification or even pay for a modification that loads the calendar view by week rather than by month? That way the page would only load a week of events rather than a month. many days have about 30 events per day so a month is a very long page anyway.

That’s all possible, though it probably isn’t quite the sort of task Modern Tribe would take on – but there are a load of competent developers out there who could help.

If you haven’t already done so you could also consider using a caching plugin, so that the pages are saved as raw HTML and don’t have to be generated from scratch every time they are requested.
