I have setup the calendar with some events and it was all working fine. For some reason now all it displays is text and a “read more” link:

If I use the default events template then the page works. If I set any other type of page template then it fails.
It was definitely working with the other page template earlier though. Not sure how I find out what’s going on?
Test how your /events page looks when you change these settings: Events » Settings » Display »
Default stylesheet used for events templates
& Events template.
The other templates are largely determined by how your theme is coded. You are able to create custom templates. I’d suggest starting in our Themer’s Guide to get started.
