is there a way to have the results show just todays events instead of all upcoming events?

Hey Martin

If you are using Events Calendar Pro, the “Today” option is available on your Events page. See https://wpshindig.com/events/today/ as an example.

You can make this the default by going to Events » Settings » Display » Default View

Unfortunately, we do not have a widget specifically for “Today” view. If you think that is something you would like as a feature I encourage you to visit our User Voice Page and either upvote an existing request or make a new request there.
