Add Upcoming events to page

I would like to add to my home page 3 most recent upcoming events. I have seen themes that handle this for you but if using a theme without this sort of functionality built in, how does one do this? Don’t want in a sidebar, but 3 side/side recent events with picture and event info.

That you can drop in any area that accepts shortcodes to show the the next 3 events.
