I looked through the tutorials and FAQ. I cannot seem to get my venue (taxonomy) pages setup, I just get a 404. I must be overlooking a step somewhere.

Here is an event post with a link to the venue: http://filmobsession.com/event/advance-screening-jack-reacher-birmingham/

    A taxonomy page (404 not found): http://filmobsession.com/venue/uptown-palladium-12/

I’ve tested with default themes and no plugins too, with no change.

    Thank you.

Can you quickly test out switching to the /%postname%/ structure for pretty permalinks and see if that impacts?

I’m already set that way. Re-saved. No change

OK, I appreciate that this is a live site and you probably don’t want to cause further disruption there, but do you have a testing/staging environment where you have been able to replicate this problem that we might play with?

Can you also confirm if you have a caching plugin enabled?

I don’t have a testing environment. I don’t see a ton of traffic, so taking the site down isn’t going to hurt much.

I have W3 Total Cache installed.

OK; before we do anything else can you try deactivating W3 Total Cache and also remove (or comment out) any extra lines of code that W3TC may have inserted into your .htaccess file, which is normally found in the root of your WordPress installation (make a backup of this file first of all to be safe).

After that, test again and please also take the time to flush your browser cache also.

Okay, did all of that and still 404.

OK. I do notice that if I try a random URL like http://filmobsession.com/xyz-non-existent/ I get a 404 (as I would expect) but if I visit http://filmobsession.com/venue/ I see what looks like an empty page or post.

Is it possible that you do indeed have a page, post or other taxonomy term that uses the slug venue? If so are you able to remove this or rename it (the slug, rather than the post title, that is)?

Yeah, I had created a page, trying things out before I contacted the board. I deleted the page, but that also got me thinking. I also had a custom post type for venues at one point. I don’t use it but I’m not sure if just having it in the past could be affecting me now.

Either way, after deleting the page… I am redirected back to the home page.

Actually, I re-saved my permalink structure and now I get a venue page. Formattings all broken, but it is showing up. Why would the layout be broken?

Hmm, tricky tricky. I wonder if that is indeed the problem. First things first, can you visit Settings > Permalinks once more to flush the rewrite rules? Assuming we’re still seeing venue pages redirecting to the homepage, can you confirm if the code that generated the old venue custom post types is still present and – if so – remove it then flush the rewrite rules again?

Posted at the same time there! OK, we’re getting somewhere if you can see the venue pages. Give me a sec to look at an example.

The formatting doesn’t look particularly bad to me, other than perhaps needing to be tweaked to match the styles and layout of your theme – which is often the case. Was there anything in particular that was jumping out at you?

I think flushing the permalinks worked. As far as the formatting question, please disregard, that’s on my end now that I’m digging into it. Thanks for your help. This appears resolved.
