I’ve just started an upgrade from 2.x ECP site to the latest. This is a similar issue to this thread: https://tri.be/support/forums/topic/latest-3-5-2-still-breaking-site/#post-142533

After updating to 3.5.2 the site will not load, either on the front end or wp-admin. Brooks suggested that I downgrade to 3.4 to ensure everything is working. I’m currently testing this on a local MAMP setup on a loaded mac.

Here’s a list of what I’ve done and the results:

    1. Upgraded directly from 2.x to 3.5.2. This was the initial attempt, and resulted in sit and spin.
    2. Downgraded from 3.5.2 to 3.4. This allowed the site to reload, albeit extremely slowly. All events were screwed up and showed multiple duplicated events.
    3. Reinstalled original site (2.x) from backup, then upgraded to 3.4. This went smoothly, site loads all pages at normal speeds. Events all appear intact.
    4. Upgraded from 3.4 to 3.5.2. Results in sit and spin again – front and back ends.
    5. Downgraded from 3.5.2 to 3.4. Site loads fine again, all events intact, but site loads slower than expected.

I’m going to proceed using 3.4, hopefully you’ll be able to help me update to the latest.

    Thanks,
    ~ Bryan

    Hi Bryan,

I’m sorry you’re facing difficulties here. Can you give me an indication of how many events you are managing and what proportion might be recurring events?

There have been a few problems and we did release a cleanup plugin to help deal with it, but since it sounds like you can’t get things working with 3.5.2 at all it may not be practical to use it just yet (but please take a look at the relevant blog post anyway).

Are you seeing any relevant errors in your error log?

Looks like all is not well… After reinstalling from the original backup, and upgrading to 3.4, it appears all of my recurring events are gone… Well, not gone… the event list says there’s over 3000 published events, but only 4 pages worth… Event category’s say they have a number of posts, but clicking through to these shows no posts available…

Do I need to update the plugins one version at a time perhaps?

Actually, the missing/not missing events is happening with the 2.x version as well. I’ve got a recurring event on the main calendar but it’s no where to be found in the back end events list. The only way to edit it is to use the edit link from the front end.

I know this is a separate issue and I should probably open a separate ticket for it…

Hmm, well upgrading in a single jump probably isn’t ideal: each point release (for example, going from 3.1 to 3.2) can represent significant changes – so while it’s probably safe to skip over some it would be hard to identify which – really the best course of action is to update incrementally, from your original version through to the current version (suppose that was 2.0.11 your next stop should be 3.0).

If you are able to roll things back and try again, this may be the best way to proceed – and you can grab historic versions of our core and premium plugins here and here.

    Does that help?

Thanks Barry. I think my plan is basically to start from scratch, clearing all old events and beginning with a fresh install. There seems to be a lot of inexplicable cruft built up over the last few years – starting fresh might clear that out as well.

    Thanks,
    ~ Bryan

Sure – sometimes that is the best course of action. We wish you luck 🙂

If we can help with anything else along the way please don’t hesitate to create new threads as needed. Thanks again!
