Thanks for this. updating the .po file didn’t work, unfortunately
neither did the snippet I added to the functions.php file. Possibly
because of the font awesome icon before it.

The String I wish to edit is “Google Map” which is found in two places
the list view of the calendar and the sidebar of the events page.
Ideally I only wish to edit it in list view, but I can live with it in
both instances.

Also don’t quite follow “You could also simply do a customization of the
view. You might want to read our Themer’s guide to get a sense of how
that works.”

If I purchased the WPML plugin, would that do it.
