I have sorted this by finding the spurious excerpt which was being echoed by the code in my theme, the SEO is now working as intended.

Update: I tried using Yoast SEO Plugin to achieve the correct page title and meta description which it achieved successfully using this method https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/seo-meta-description-events-page/
However now the event listing page and detail event pages are showing a paragraph of text above the main content below the header and I have switched to the all in one seo plugin but its not working at all for me.

    Have I missed something?

Hi this answer was very helpful thanks Cliff it addresses many small problems. It doesn’t address the meta description or page title however on the main listing. In fact I cant find any meta description in the page at all and the page title is always the same as the main page heading.
