To clarify:

We want to bring specific events from http://events.mit.edu/index.html to a new WP site.

Ok, things seem to be working better now. I set the page template to events and not theme default.

And then I went in and changed the before html so hopefully the button and image stop disappearing

So after digging around for awhile I found out that my tribe-events folder was the issue and I just replaced them with new ones.
