Show only the first upcoming instance of recurring events

I would like to have this checked in the photo view initially instead of unchecked. Any way to do this?

It looks like a similar request was made and resolved by my team-mate Nico. Check out his solution at https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/hide-recurring-events-with-user-toggle-and-default-on/#post-1216852.

Then in Event » Settings » Display, select a default view as Photo. And in Events » Settings » General » Front-end recurring event instances toggle, make sure this is checked.
