ParticipantA problem has just come up on a site that’s been running Events Calendar OK for a few years. Not sure if it’s due to a recent update, but here’s the issue.
https://www.younghackney.org/whats-on/
All the events on that first page have a URL in the style:
https://www.younghackney.org/event/2017-04-04/
All of them return a 404. On the next page of events, the first one that doesn’t return a 404 is:
https://www.younghackney.org/event/crash-course-swimming/2017-04-12/
This is listed in the back end, the 404s aren’t. Why are those 404s being listed?

ParticipantThe client is sure that the ones not listed in the back, listed on the front but giving 404s, should be listed in the back and not giving 404s. But there’s no way to edit them to check their details. I’m trying to look manually through the database.

KeymasterHello Steve,
Thanks for reaching out with that issue!
I checked your site now and all events on the first 2 pages of https://www.younghackney.org/whats-on/ looked fine with proper URLs.
Did you manage to find and fix the issue or do you still need help with this?
Cheers,

ParticipantThanks, yes, it seems that the ‘parent’ events had been deleted (completely, emptied out of trash), but recurrences remained. Not sure how this could have happened? We bit the bullet and restored a backup, losing a bit of new work but restoring the events. If you’ve ever heard of this happening, let me know. I thought an editor may have done it but surely if it was trashed through the WP interface the recurrences would have been trashed too?

KeymasterHmmm… I’m also not sure what the cause could have been. Didn’t see a case like that before.
A short while back we have changed how the recurring events are handled in the back-end and in the database, but an update with not too big of a gap between versions should not cause anything like this. If the version jump is bigger, then there is the possibility. In these cases running a multiple-step update usually gives the desired and expected result.
And yes, if you delete the starting event, then all recurrences should be deleted (moved to trash) as well.
If you break the starting event from the series, then the next event will take on the responsibility of being the head.
I hope this helps clarify a bit more.
Is there anything else related to this issue / topic I can help you with?

ParticipantI think things are OK as they stand now, it’s just one of those issues that ideally would be properly diagnosed, but practically we’ve had to restore from back up, and keep an eye out.

KeymasterSteve, thanks for your reply. Happy to hear things seem to be working okay now.
Since this is marked resolved I am going to close this ticket, but if you need anything else related to this topic or another please post a new one in the forum and we will be happy to help you out.
Cheers,
