Event Category and Website Reset when User Edits Event

We are using Community Events to allow submission of events and when a user who has submitted an events edits that event (using the ‘edit event’ link on their list of submitted events) the categories are all un-checked and the website field is blank. They can re-enter the information and it saves…but if a user goes in to edit some content in the body, they may not think to check the website and categories, thus they are gone.

We do have a heavily customized version of the event submission form, so maybe one of the updates caused this. I looked at the newer version of the specific files for the website and taxonomy fields withing Community Events compared to my customized version, and there is no difference other than some arbitrary text and classes I added.

I cannot recreate any of this behavior on the most recent versions of our plugins, so unfortunately I think your customizations are the main issue as you suggest here:

We do have a heavily customized version of the event submission form, so maybe one of the updates caused this.

If possible, I would recommend deactivating EVERY PLUGIN except JUST these two plugins:
• The Events Calendar
• The Events Calendar: Community Events

☝️Once in this state, be sure to first back up all customizations and then remove ALL customizations. Be sure that not a single other plugin—even other “The Events Calendar” add-ons/snippets/etc.—is active.

In this state, how do things behave?

Hey George,

I pushed the site into a staging environment and have only those two plugins running on a generic twentysixteen theme (http://pondhole.staging.wpengine.com/) and although the categories are “un-checked” when I edit the event, when I save it the categories are still showing on the front end, so no big deal there. The URL is staying as it should, so there is a problem in a customization somewhere.

I’ll continue to troubleshoot and update soon.

Hey George,

I did end up finding the issue. In the website.php file in the community events plugin I had put a value=”http://” instead of placeholder=”http://” so each time the edit form came up, it was putting the http:// instead of the value saved in the DB…so when the re-saved after editing it was overwriting the old URL with the http:// value.

All good now.

Categories do remain intact, although when editing the current selected categories do NOT show as checked off. I was able to replicate that on the twentysixteen install with just the two plugins activated. So that is a small bug.

Thanks for sharing your progress! I’m glad things are resolved for the most part here.

In regards to that additional small bug, that is something we can definitely ticket and get fixed in an upcoming release. I will investigate that; make a development ticket if I find what you describe; and we can hopefully patch that up in a maintenance release down the line.
