    Hi there,
I recently updated to the latest ECP and immediately noticed a much slower load time of the calendar. Much slower than with the previous version of ECP. I had to delete the calendar widget because every single page with the widget on it took much too long to load. I host with WPEngine and also have a pro account with Cloudflare for CDN. I’m not sure what to do next. Once the calendar opens and I am navigating within it, the individual events open at a decent speed. It is also slow when I advance to the next month. Any advice? Here’s the URL: http://socalkidssandiego.com/events/
    Thank you.

    Hi Kathleen,

That is very odd since WPEngine is some of the best hosting you can get. Have you tried clearing cache/CDN contents through the admin? Maybe there’s some old code or something that’s stuck and causing the slowness? After trying that, try clearing your permalinks by visiting Settings > Permalinks. If that doesn’t work either, then I would suggest deactivating all other plugins to see if another plugin could be conflicting with ours. Let me know how that all goes.

Also, how many events total do you have on your website?

Hi Jonah, Yes, I cleared the cache and did it again this morning. I went to Setting > Permalinks but don’t see an option for clearing them. As for the total number of events, there are 6,800+ on my database. It’s taking about 30 seconds for the calendar to load.

    Hi Kathleen,

Have you tried deactivating all other plugins to see if our plugin is conflicting with any others? It could be with the new 3.0 version that it is conflicting in a different way…

    Thanks,
    Jonah

Hi Jonah, I haven’t tried deactivating all the other plugins yet. This morning I updated the ECP plugin (there was one for the Pro version), purged the cache and it seemed to run a bit faster. But I do think that having almost 7,000 events in the database could be slowing it down. Is there a utility available that will allow me to clean out old events? I would like to clear out all the 2011 events in bulk, if possible.

    Hi Kathleen,

That is a lot of events and I don’t know what the cap is, so I’m not sure what else could be causing the issue here. Yes, there are a couple plugins you can use to delete old events:
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/the-events-calendar-housekeeper/

    DX Remove Oldies

Try those and let me know how that goes and whether or not you want us to look into this further.

    Thanks,

    Hi Jonah and Kathleen,

I’ve the same problem with load after the update. I use Wp super Cache.
When a page is in cache it works a bit better but still to slow I think. I can not use the widget because that gives the problem on all the pages. Then again, if a page is cached it seems to work fine but, as the webmaster off my site, and all known users of the site, I see the site always non-cached and then the site is so slow I can’t work with it. I also have a lot (800) of events.

I would like to setup the widget, but it’s slowing the site down to much.

    Hi Harold,

800 events is not too bad (at least I don’t think so). Have you tried deactivating all other plugins to rule out any conflict or issue there? Who are you hosted with and what server platform are you on?

    Jonah,

My server is at IntraHosting in the Netherlands. VDS DA, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD, 250 GB Traffic.
I only have a live site with 10.000+ views. I cannot trie to deactivate al plugins.

@jonah I think that Kathleen is also on a genesis framework and, if I’m correct, using the News theme as I do.

Hi Harold, things seem to be loading pretty fast for me. It’s always hard to troubleshoot performance issues and at this point we are not aware of or have not heard many reports of our plugin causing things to slow down. The first thing we would need you to try is to deactivate all other plugins to see if that changes anything. If you can’t do it on the live server, you can setup a development copy of the site so you can do testing there.

    Regards,
    Jonah

Hi Harold and Laura. Thanks for your input. Harold, I am on the Genesis Framework. I use the Lifestyle Child theme. A friend told me that the calendar loads fast for her. But for me, it takes about 30 seconds to load. I would love to put the calendar widget back up in the sidebar as well. Jonah, I am going to deactivate the plugins on my staging site. I will let you know the results.

Sounds good Kathleen, if your friend say it loads fast for them then maybe it’s an ISP/internet issue?

@Laura – please try some of the above suggestions and if you can, please provide us more information about your hosting/server setup.

    Thanks,
    Jonah
