better search or integration with Relevanssi

I’ve got a site that uses the Events Calendar plugin, and I’m wanting the text search within events to be more flexible.

Specifically, I’d like text searches to include matches on categories as well as in body text, and I’d like multi-word text searches to match occurrences of each word within the body text (not just the ‘exact phrase’ default of a WP_Query match).

I’ve also got Relevanssi running for the site-wise search. But the events listing search (with a few Filter Bar filters and other customisations) doesn’t seem to be hooked into Relevanssi. Relevanssi seems to supply the kind of extra functionality I’m looking for, so I don’t want to reinvent the wheel. But do you have any experience of / hints for either integrating the EC search with Relevanssi, or achieving the same search goals in other ways?

Thanks for reaching out! At this time, there is no specific integration with these plugins. What you write here is accurate:

Our plugin is not hooked into Relevanssi at this time, and we unfortunately don’t have experience making it so. 🙁 I’m sorry to disappoint! I would recommend posing these same questions to the Relevanssi folks to see if they have any insight on extending their plugin’s features like you describe.

It looks like Relevanssi don’t have any experience of integrating with EC (https://wordpress.org/support/topic/drawing-on-relevanssi-text-search-for-modern-tribe-events-calendar-search?replies=3).

If you don’t have any pointers regarding leveraging Relevanssi’s features for the EC search, do you have any regarding trying to achieve my requirements without other plugins? I need to:

1. Make the text search match categories, so a text search for ‘dance’ should match events which are categorised as ‘dance’, but don’t necessarily have ‘dance’ in the body text (obviously this is in addition to matching those with ‘dance’ in the body).
2. I’d like multi-word text searches to match ANY of the words, not the exact phrase.

I think both features are common to plugins which extend WP’s rudimentary search functionality. Is there any way to extend EC’s search in these ways?

Thanks for sharing this Mike—I’m sorry to see that they weren’t quite able to help here, either.

Modifying search within WordPress is unfortunately a tricky thing to do, and so no, we don’t have any specific pointers on modifying search in regards to The Events Calendar specifically. 🙁

There are numerous search-related plugins out there, but we cannot speak to any of them and don’t make any special integrations for any search plugins. If you stumble across a search plugin that looks promising, the best I can recommend would be to run these sorts of questions by them to see if their plugin will do the job you’re looking for.
