What happened? After upgrading, the look of the events page is gone, and the calendar is different. I had thumbnails with my events, and the display of information was to my liking. Now, the choice of info is out of my control. The event price info is displayed, and various other fields are displayed in the list view, that didn’t used to show up. Also fonts seem to be different, etc. Is there any way to switch back to the older plug-in without losing my old data? HELP!

3.0 update changed a lot of things, so some of the more advanced functionality you introduced/removed from displays will take a bit more work, but I know that in the earlier versions we had created an /events folder within our theme for modifications… now it needs to be /tribe-events. If you properly modified the core files using overrides in your theme itself then you may be able to restore some of the customizations by changing that one file name.

Where would I find this directory? Do not see it under the events-calendar-pro plugin directory. Is there any way to revert back to the earlier version without data loss?

You should always back up your data to prevent loss when updating plugins (more importantly, back up your data when updating your theme).
Where did you make your customizations? If you did them under your theme, then go to wp-content/[your theme name]/events/ and rename the folder to /tribe-events/. (By doing this you still won’t necessarily get all of your customizations, but you can integrate them into the new files). If you made the customizations directly to the plugin files then you’re out of luck unless you created a backup copy of the files/customizations somewhere…

    Hi Victoria!

Sorry to hear that you’ve had something of a rough ride here – and thank you Sean for pitching in with support and advice here 🙂

3.0 was indeed a major update and so much has changed. Through our blog and newsletters we did try to emphasize that so that users could take precautions and even budget for additional time and resources (or hold off from updating, even). If we failed to communicate that satisfactorily in your case though then please accept our apologies.

As Sean covered, the tribe-events directory is something you would need to create in your theme, and you would place your own custom templates in there.

We’ve updated our Themer’s Guide so that should be your first port of call to see what has changed.

For any more specific questions definitely feel free to create new threads as needed.

I was able to take a site backup that I had recently done, and replace the two new eventcalendar directories under the plugins directory, with the old ones, and it restored the old look and feel. WordPress tends to ‘force’ you to update. And when this has a drastic appearance change, it screws up the website. I appreciate the fact that Modern Tribe is trying to make the software better, but when it changes a look and feel of a website, perhaps a choice to keep the older look and feel with a checkbox would be a better solution.

I’m glad you were able to get back to a point where you’re happy – and we definitely take on board what you are saying.

WordPress does make updating plugins a very easy process and so that can make it tempting to just click and go – but as with all other plugins and indeed any piece of software it is definitely worth checking up on expected changes, especially where there is a big jump in version number, before taking that step (and taking the time to backup so you can restore things if it all goes awry, as of course you have done 🙂 ).

Trying to maintain backward compatibility, even a “skin” that looks like the previous version, would actually have been a tremendous amount of work and would have changed the price point of the plugin by a large margin; but I’d definitely agree some means of communicating the scope of the changes before users hit update could have been useful.

At any rate, it sounds like you’re all good now and that of course is the main thing 🙂
