Handling Data Privacy on Your Site
If you handle other people’s private information, you’ll want to make sure your website is compliant with privacy laws. The two most common laws to be familiar with are the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California Consumer Privacy Act.
Data handling is particularly important if you are subscribing event attendees to any marketing content or using Event Automator to collect information for marketing purposes. People need to specifically consent to having their data used for marketing, and they have to right to have their data removed.
- If you want to send marketing materials to people who purchase tickets or RSVP to events, ask for consent as part of the registration or purchase process. You can use our Attendee Registration feature or any number of third party plugins designed for this.
- If you use Event Automator to gather and update data, add some sort of tag to the personal information to track customer opt-ins.
- When a customer purchases multiple tickets, their opt-in consent only applies to the ticket purchaser. You’ll need to track if there are only attendees who have not yet opted-in. You can also ask the ticket purchaser to confirm they have the consent of the other attendees.
- Add information to your site about privacy and data usage so that your users know what steps you’ve taken to protect their information, and how to contact you if they want their information removed.
